There is no hard and fast definition of mysticism, or mystics, for that matter. They are too diffuse to nail down in a tidy definition. Mysticism defies words!

Despite that, we will try to come to grips with mysticism in the European Middle Ages, or at least get a taste of it. As much as mysticism was an integral part of the medieval church, mysticism presented problems for the authorities of the institution since it wasn’t quantifiable or contained easily within acceptable theological categories.

We will be asking a few questions: Is mysticism a study of God or of ourselves? Who really are the mystics? What do they have to teach us? We will look at the lives and teachings of Julian of Norwich, Meister Eckhart, and Marguerite de Porete.
